Gecko News 3/20/2026

Dear Garfield Families,

Happy Spring! The transition into spring is always an energetic turning point in the school year. With the warmer weather and longer days finally here, our students are spending more time outdoors and bringing that refreshed focus back into the classroom. This season often marks a period of significant academic “clicking” for many children, and we’re looking forward to maintaining that momentum as we head into the final stretch of the year.

Spring Break

Speaking of Spring, Students do not have school from March 23 – March 27th.

School will resume on Monday, March 30th.

Kindergarten

If you live within the Garfield boundary and have an incoming kindergartener, please register them as soon as possible. This helps ensure we have the right staffing and resources in place to give your child the best start possible. We are so excited to meet our new students!

Lost and Found

The lost and found is filling up again! Please feel free to stop by to see if any of the items belong to your student. Items will be donated the week after spring break by Friday, April 3rd.

Bike Safety

It’s almost time for our school wide bike safety lessons that start the week after spring break and we would love your help!

Message from our Bike Safety Coordinator

Garfield’s Bike Safety Program is Coming!

March 30 – April 10

Students will gain confidence, practice safe riding, and have fun on bikes! Here’s how families can support the program:

Prepare Your Student

– Students will use CSD bikes & helmets (their own bike/helmet may be used with PE teacher approval).

– Wear closed-toed athletic shoes and fitted clothing (no long skirts, dresses, or loose pant cuffs that can get tangled in moving bike parts).

– For best helmet fit: avoid high ponytails, large clips/bows, or bulky twists/braids.

Volunteer

– Complete the CSD volunteer approval process (allow a few weeks).

Sign up here to help during PE classes or on Biking Field Trips.

– Volunteers assist with helmet & bike fitting, encourage riders, support new learners, and chaperone biking field trips.

– PE teacher support: No bike riding required.

– Biking Field Trip: Must be able to ride.

Bike Maintenance Sessions

– Open to 4th–5th graders & approved volunteers

– Learn and practice basic bike care while helping maintain the CSD fleet.

– Sessions rotate among elementary schools. It’s @ Garfield on Wednesday, April 8 from 2:40 – 3:30p.

– Sign up on your school’s SignUpGenius or email cassie.minot@corvallis.k12.or.us to find out about sessions at other schools.

Thank you for helping make the Bike Safety Program a memorable and empowering experience for our students!

Have a wonderful spring break!

Sincerely,

Nancy Davila-Williams, Principal
