Gecko News (1/9/2025)

Dear Garfield Families,

Welcome back! I hope you all had a peaceful holiday season. It’s wonderful to have our students back as we move into the next part of the school year!

Attendance and Tardies

I know it can be hard to get students back into an early morning routine but we are counting on your partnership with getting students to school each day and as close to on time as possible. We do start the day with breakfast. However, that part of the school day is very important because during that time they check in with peers and their teacher. They get to ease into the day and get settled with everyone else. When students are late, they still need time to settle in, order lunch, put their things away and figure out what the class is doing – they really need the beginning of the school day to help them feel ready to learn. Please help them have a smooth morning transition by getting them to school on time each day.

Please let your child’s teacher know if there is anything we can help with.

Traffic Safety Update

In an effort to improve safe routes to school for our students, we had a team do an observation and had a discussion about what we need to address. Here is some of what we need your help with:

  • Please drop off on the school side of the road (not across the street)

This applies to both Dixon for K-1 and 11th Street for 4-5.

  • Please drop off on the school side of the drop off lane out front for 2-3 students – pull up as far as you can
  • Don’t allow your children to cross the road by the buses – walk them to the crosswalk on Garfield and Dixon and to the gate – they are little and hard to see by those big buses
  • Use crosswalks: Including in the parking lot

PTA Collaboration:

The Garfield PTA and the Lincoln PTA are collaborating on a special event for our K-1 Students. 1,2,3 Andres videos are a part of the Benchmark reading curriculum resources in the early grades and they have arranged for the duo to visit Corvallis in January! The K-1 classes will be visiting Lincoln for the show.  What a wonderful opportunity! A big thank you to our PTA!

Thanks everyone.

Sincerely,

Nancy Davila-Williams, Principal
