The Oregon Battle of the Books (OBOB) is a statewide voluntary reading motivation and comprehension program. Students in 3rd-5th grade are exposed to quality literature representing a variety of literary styles and viewpoints. A list of selected titles are chosen to be read and these books are used in trivia style battles by teams of 3-5 players.

Teams compete within our school to crown a school champion. Our winning team goes on to compete in a regional battle with eyes on the prize of going to the state competition.

Last week, we had an exciting week of battles ending with three teams qualifying for the final four and two teams tying for the fourth spot! Our students have been engaged, enthusiastic and well behaved impressing everyone that has come to watch. On Tuesday, we had a tiebreaker battle for fourth place between the Amazing Sea Cows and The Rocket Readers. The Rocket Readers pulled it out after a close contest that was neck and neck for most of the battle. The Final Four teams: The Rocket Readers, the Book Ballers 3.0, the Marvelous Mangoes and the Rapid Reading Rhinos then battled it out to determine the two finalists.

The championship battle happened this Wednesday between the Book Ballers 3.0 and the Marvelous Mangoes in an exciting rematch of last years final. It was cheered by all 3rd-5th classrooms and ended with the crowning of the Book Ballers 3.0 as champions who will represent Garfield School in the Regional Competition.

Congratulations to all 84 participants (19 teams) for showing great sportsmanship and for reading many books.
