Dear Garfield Families,
I hope you are all doing well and enjoying this beautiful spring weather.
I wanted to reach out to you all to share about a change we have for this year.
In years past, we have taught Bike Safety at the fifth grade level. It was one of my favorite activities as a fifth grade teacher because we were able to see our experienced bike riding students in their element and we were able to add new riders to the bike riding community every year!
Unfortunately, we will no longer have the same program coming into the school to teach Bike Safety but we do not want to end this opportunity for our students. Our district has been working on a way to make bike safety more sustainable for our students and the amazing elementary PE teachers are now taking this on in PE.
Even more exciting is that Ms. Lepe would not only be working on Bike Safety lessons with fifth grade students. She will be working on Bike Safety lessons with Kinder through fifth grade students! As you can imagine, it will look very different at each grade level ending in fifth grade with the community bike ride (next year). Kinder through second grade bike safety will be during their PE time in the gym. Third through fifth grade will be partly in the gym and partly on the blacktop during their PE time.
We are so excited about this but we will definitely need help! Bike safety will happen over a two week period from the end of April to the first week of May and will be about four PE sessions per class. Volunteers will be playing various roles and do not need to be experienced bike riders to volunteer. Volunteers will be helping in various ways like fitting helmets, putting the cones out, etc. All cleared volunteers are welcome! We are hoping to get a few volunteers for every classroom and we have sixteen classrooms!
If you are a cleared volunteer, and can commit to the dates for bike safety, please contact the front office to let us know and we will sign you up. You are also welcome to send me an email at [email protected].
If you want to help but haven’t registered to volunteer yet, this is the time to start that process. We will not be able to clear volunteers in time if you register too close to when you’d like to volunteer.
Volunteering
All volunteers must be cleared before they can volunteer in any CSD school. Clearance can take up to 3 weeks. If you’re not sure if you have been cleared, you are welcome to stop by and check the volunteer computer anytime during school hours. If your name appears on the list, you are cleared. https://www.csd509j.net/departments/human-resources/volunteer/
A note from Mrs. Meyers about Poetry Month:
April is National Poetry Month… It’s almost time for the Garfield Poetry Contest!
During the month of April, students can submit an original poem in any language.
“Inspired by…” poems are also welcome. We will set up a table by the office with paper (for optional use; poems can be written on any piece of paper). Look for it after spring break.
- There will be a separate basket for submitting poems.
- All poems are due by April 30th.
- Winners will be chosen from every classroom.
You can support students by…
– reading poems
– writing poems
– displaying poems
– talking about poems
– pointing out the “poetry table”
Thanks for your time and support! Happy Poetry Month!
Lost and Found
Our Lost and Found is full again! Please stop by to check the lost and found if your child is missing a jacket, sweater, or any other layer they came to school with. We will be emptying out the lost and found over spring break to make room for new items we find.
Spring break is next week!
There is no school next week March 24 – March 28
School resumes Monday, March 31st
Please don’t hesitate to contact us with any questions at (541)757-5941.
Sincerely,
Nancy Davila-Williams, Principal
