PTA News (3-25-2023)

Greetings Garfield PTA volunteers and supporters!

This spring the PTA is excited to bring back our Books and Breakfast event on Saturday, April 29. Our Books and Breakfast event includes a free breakfast prepared and served by the PTA, a book drive and exchange, and a social gathering for the Garfield community.

In order for us to pull off this event, the PTA will need volunteers to help plan, prep, and run the Books and Breakfast event!

Volunteer roles will include tasks such as:

lead volunteers/committee

organizing the book drive

recruiting additional volunteers

publicity/flyers

reserving equipment

requesting food donations

food prep

set-up and clean-up

cooking

If you are willing and able to volunteer, please email the PTA at [email protected] and make sure to complete the Volunteer Background check. Thank you for supporting the PTA and our school!

Sincerely,

Garfield PTA

PTA Library Fundraiser

Is your child often pumped up about the brand new book they just brought home from the school library? Did you know that the average age of the books in our school library is over 20 years old? This year, the Garfield PTA is raising funds to purchase updated, engaging Spanish and English non-fiction and fiction books for the library so that our kids come home thrilled and excited to read the book they just checked out!

Reading and literacy among Oregon students are at a low point after the pandemic’s limited in-person school and the rise of screen-based learning. In 2022, only 38% of 3rd-8th graders demonstrated proficiency in reading.  We can help! Our goal is $5000 to help send Garfield Librarian Ted McCann (known to students as “El Profe”) to the Feria Internacional del Libro, one of the largest Spanish book fairs around. Often books in Spanish are difficult to obtain and at times cannot be purchased through our school district. At the book fair he will purchase these much-needed books for our library. Funds raised will also help provide books for programs that encourage reading, like Lucha Libros and the Oregon Battle of the Books. All students will benefit from these library books, helping to build excitement and interest in reading, improving proficiency and instilling a lifelong love of reading.

Any donation will help make an impact, and any extra funds raised will be used for other PTA-funded student activities. If every Garfield family donated $5, we would earn $2000 to put toward this fundraiser. Thank you in advance for your contribution to engagement
in reading that has so many lifelong academic and mental health benefits. Any amount is appreciated! Please donate in the Garfield office or online at:
