Gecko News 9/11/2026

Dear Garfield Families,

The school year is officially underway. Students are settling into their daily routines, and our new classroom communities are taking shape. It has been fantastic seeing and hearing the energy throughout the building. We are so proud of the Garfield Geckos!

We have a community event this week. Here are the details:

Garfield School Picnic and Open House (Curriculum Night)

This event is an opportunity for all families to have a meal together and learn about their children’s new grade level. Here are the details:

  • Picnic from 5:30-6:15: Bring your family’s picnic dinner to enjoy at school
  • Entrance will be through the main front entrance of the school. Gates will be closed and opened at the end of the event
  • Classroom sessions begin at 6:15. We will have two rotations of about 30 minutes each
  • If you have more than one child at Garfield, we recommend going to the older student’s session first. The first sessions for K-1 can get very crowded
  • Children should not be left unattended. Please keep children with you or make a plan for their supervision
  • If it rains – the picnic will be canceled and we will continue with the indoor part of the evening at 6:15 pm

Garfield Assemblies

We invite you to join us for our monthly Garfield assemblies! Assemblies are in the Garfield gym usually on a Thursday at 8:00am. If you’d like to join us, please:

  • Sign in on the clipboard in the front office
  • Enjoy the assembly – families usually stand by the entrance wall with some of the staff for assemblies
  • Head back to the office when the assembly is over and sign out
  • The first assembly is on Thursday, September 17th

Driving Safely

Drivers, at drop off and pick up, please pull away slowly and cautiously through the parking lot and around the school. We have many little ones around and lots of people crossing streets.

Please wait until crossing guards are on the curb before driving.

Names on Personal Items

Thank you for your help with having your children’s names written in their personal items! This helps us find the owner of anything left behind.

Volunteering

Volunteers at Garfield help in so many ways and make such a difference in our community!

If you are interested in volunteering, you will need to complete this registration and be cleared beforehand: VOLUNTEER APPLICATION

  • Please know that it takes a few weeks to be cleared and clearance is required before the date you want to volunteer.
  • Volunteer clearance is good for 2 school years. (however, if you apply in April that counts for the 26-27 school year. So, apply now to be cleared for the full school year.

Volunteer Information and Training

PTA General Meeting – Volunteer Orientation & Info Session: Wednesday, September 16, 6:00-7:30pm. Join us for our first PTA General Meeting of the year! Whether you’re brand new to Garfield or a returning volunteer, this is the perfect time to learn how you can get involved. We’ll cover all the ways to volunteer (in the classroom, during specials, or at PTA events like STEAM Night, Book Fair, and the Gecko Garden), volunteer etiquette and what to expect, and how to sign up for the committees and events that interest you most. Come ready to ask questions, meet other Garfield families, and find your place in our school community! Snacks and childcare provided, and the meeting is presented in English with Spanish interpretation available.
